"Magic Threshold": Milan’s new gateway to the world

Recently inaugurated at Milano Malpensa 1 Airport, the “Magic Threshold” embodying a gateway to the world was designed by architects Nicolin, Marinoni, Calzoni and Di Gregorio, and houses a work by artist Garutti.

The project enriches the airport with a new architectural structure celebrating the idea of “threshold” through an incorporeal curtain rendered by light materializing by means of gusts of fog and illuminating the vast space that passengers walk through to enter or exit the airport.

Blue dot-like LED guide lights mark the path on the floor, evoking taxiway lights. The 900 square metre pavilion is also designed to house art exhibitions.

Construction started in late September 2010 and ended in March 2011.
